What's In A Golf Training Grip?
By Joseph Corbett
Have you ever had anyone say to you “Get a grip on yourself?” Or “He' s got a good grip on reality.” Getting a “grip” is not only important in life, but is essential to playing great golf. The training grip is a universe unknown to most people, but if a golfer doesn’t know about it… then his or her game will suffer tremendously.

I never really thought of the training grip as very important to my game until I hurt my wrist doing some construction work a few years ago. In fact, I strongly feel that this painful experience was very useful (not fun at all), but useful - useful in getting my conscious attention. It is not just a good training grip that we're discussing here; it's the application of consciousness to every aspect of playing golf, with the training grip as just one aspect to increasing your ability!

Just look at Tiger Woods. He brings focus and one pointed concentration to his game of golf, and this includes his training grip. Here are 3 aspects of Tiger’s game that we can easily incorporate for our own and training grip.

1) Concentration - Concentration, according to the Webster dictionary is the direction of attention on a single object. Of course, implied here is that you have the ability to concentrate and

that you have done the prescribed work to accomplish concentration. Focus is the result of concentration. By the way, happiness is also one of the measured results of concentration. So, go ahead and concentrate on your training grip and just see what happens.

2) Application - Once the attention is gathered up from all the distractions of life and focus is gained, that's when the application phase comes into play. This might explain all those so-so rounds of over the past twenty years - whoops! Concentrate, focus and then apply the energy.

Deciding what is worth applying that energy to is also a useful exercise. Why? Because we live in a stress filled world that pulls and tugs on us - that's why. It's not just your training grip that wants and needs attention. It is though, the point at which we'd like to put some attention when we are approaching the first tee next Saturday morning. Give it a try.

3) Results - If we are successful in our training grip experiment, the signs will show and our game will improve. Once perfected, the attention can be directed as required to almost any activity. It's not about multi-tasking though as everybody thinks; it' s about gaining mastery over the self and that's a good thing, that' s a very good thing indeed.
